The Global MBA in Design, Fashion and Luxury Goods aims to strike a balance between creativity and business in the management of luxury companies, by providing managers and entrepreneurs with the know-how gained from Italian excellence.

In-depth analysis of fashion and design business models in different industries enables students to combine product knowledge with luxury management-specific managerial approaches, providing vision and an operational capacity for international expansion.

Thanks to a close relationship with Italian companies that act as international symbols of high quality, the program focuses on the practical aspects of fashion and luxury management.

This course has the potential to make a great impact on the professional and personal futures of young managers. Via trajectory analysis, students will examine the characteristics of market segments with the greatest international value, focusing in on the steps necessary to achieve their ambitions.

The Global MBA in Design, Fashion and Luxury Goods is a 12-month, full-time program. Over the course of the first term, classes will focus on general management and during the second term, students will study specialized subjects. International faculty-lead classes are accompanied by a number of managerial guest speakers, alongside participation in a business laboratory and analysis of real-life cases. This is followed by 500-hours dedicated to an internship at a leading company in the field of design, fashion and luxury goods, or an entrepreneurial work project. Classes made up of students from a wide range of geographical origins, cultures and global perspectives help to enrich this experience with additional stimulation and opportunities for open discussion.

Structure

The Master’s degree is a 12-month full-time program including 518 hours of class activities, 1300 hours of individual and group work and a 500 hour internship.

The academic portion is divided into three terms. During the first term students will study the fundamentals of general management, while the second and third term will concentrate on the specific subjects of each track (please, find further information about the courses in the section ‘Courses’ below).

I Term: September 2017 – December 2017

  • “Ice-breaking” Week
  • General Management Courses: Corporate Finance, Corporate Strategy, Financial and Managerial Accounting, International Finance, Marketing Management, Cross-cultural Management, Organizational Analysis: Leading People and Organizations.

II Term – III Term: January 2018 – May 2018

  • Track Specific Courses: Gemology and Watches, Industrial Design and Branding, Production and Logistics, Luxury Goods: Boats, Cars and Motorbikes, Perfumes and Eyewear, Business Development Laboratory, Business Planning, Management Consulting.

The three terms are followed by an internship period of 500 working hours. The internship can be carried out at various companies and agencies in Italy or abroad. The internship serves as an opportunity for students to put into practice the theory and techniques learned during the three academic terms. The internship will allow students to obtain hands-on experience by working on management strategies, analyzing business operations, and creating solutions to real problems. Students are encouraged to make the most of the internship opportunity and to learn from the professionals they will be working with.

At the end of the internship students will be required to submit a ‘Final Report’, which they will present to the Director of Studies showcasing their activities and analyzing the theories and lessons learned during the program.

Students who are interested can also choose to take an extracurricular course of Italian.

COURSES

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the Italian design world. Particular attention will be paid to its origins, main characteristics, and inclinations. The course will elaborate on various themes that are typical of different areas of design implementation. The course will be divided into three parts: Italian Design Identity, Testimonies, and Examples & Methods.



Participants in the program will actively work on business development concepts during a project that does not merely entail the practical application of theoretical issues but a “learning by doing” project, during which they will discuss, analyze and work with a hands-on approach. Participants in the project will be led by a manager in order to develop a real-life challenging long term project of business redefinition, launch and development, where not only the analysis is important but also planning for the implementation stage.



This course provides an introduction to business planning concepts and the tools necessary to set up new businesses. Corporate entrepreneurship as well as various start-up cases will be developed.



This course will provide a framework within which to study factors that lead to success of top brands in competitive markets. Furthermore, practical tools will be provided to design and launch brands, including the ability to develop a successful marketing strategy, as well as communicate and maintain a specific reputation.



The course provides a framework for understanding and analyzing investment and financial decisions of corporations. Lectures and readings provide an introduction to present value techniques, capital budgeting, capital structure decisions, corporate cost of capital, initial and seasoned equity offerings and an introduction to corporate risk management. Most of the topics presented during the course will also be analyzed and studied using a case study approach.



This course provides the core of corporate strategy through the identification of a superior competitive position, the analysis of a strategic situation and the creation of a proper organizational context to ensure the chosen strategy is the most effective one. Through the analysis of real-world cases, participants develop analytical skills that help them to acquire practical experience in dealing with strategic issues. The course aims to provide an understanding of the basic principles and practices of strategic management. It will develop a dynamic approach to competitive analysis and business strategy that is well suited to today's turbulent competitive environment.



This course provides an understanding of the role of culture in management and organizational processes in today’s inter-cultural business world. After an initial theoretical introduction to the concept of culture, the course will analyze its relevance to organizational issues such as: human resources management, cross-cultural communication, team-work, motivation, and negotiation.



This course explores the different types of operations, marketing and finance used in perfumes and eyewear industries. Special attention will be given to vertical integration, branding and licensing policies and to channel management and channel development activity.



This course introduces the main concepts of financial and managerial accounting. Financial accounting covers accounting notions, principles, and the structure of the three main financial statements. It also includes profitability and financial performance analysis. Managerial accounting includes basic cost concepts, cost behavior patterns, and the use of managerial accounting data for decision-making, management control systems and performance measurement systems. Particular focus is placed on intangible and intellectual capital measurement and reporting, on non-financial performance measurement systems and strategic cost management.



The course aims to discuss the main principles of identifying and evaluating gemstones. Furthermore, industry experts will share the main issues in the jewelry market with the participants, by following the development from artisan culture to industrial serial production. In the second part of the course we discuss watch-making, considering that watches are mechanisms that measure the passage of time and displays the current time: movements may be entirely mechanical, entirely electronic (potentially with no moving parts), or a blend of the two. Also, we analyze the trends in watch-making and in the watch industry.

This course aims at enabling students to evaluate the likely impact of future IT innovations on their firm and industry. This requires a correct understanding of the key drivers of technology’s impact on the business ecosystem. Topics covered include: open source design, chatbot, bigdata, simulation and augmented reality. Computational thinking, computing for sustainable business and the challenge of managing cyber security are also included. During this course, participants will be expected to engage in both the technical and the managerial dimensions of digital challenges.

This cycle of seminars constitutes a unique occasion for the MBA students to meet and interact with key leaders of the global economic, social and political scene. These series of lectures, especially designed for the MBA class, reflects the main goal of the Program, which is to link theories and practice.



The course will provide an overview of the different approaches available to identify the rules governing cross-border commercial relations, given the existence of relevant differences in domestic legal systems. In this respect, it will provide an overview of the topic of international contracts, boiler plate clauses, arbitration, and banking guarantees. Also, the course will cover some features and main issues of banking regulation, legal aspects of the housing bubble and of the 2007-2009 financial crisis, as well as the main issues of corporate governance and of banking transactions and banking contracts. Some insights on data protection and privacy issues in commercial litigations will also be provided.

This course examines macroeconomics in open economies that are linked by trade, capital flows, and monetary policies. The goal is to provide a framework for understanding current events affecting the world economy. The participants acquire the analytical tools needed to examine the financial performance of economies, balance of payments problems and policy, the causes and consequences of exchange rate movements and the implications of macroeconomic relationships between countries.



This course will focus on: logistics in commercial relations (especially in intercontinental operations), customer service levels, and distribution costs.



The course focuses on the organization of a company, identifying its characteristics and exploring the strategic design for working in and managing such an organization. The topics covered are focused on specific elements of organizational design linking them to the overarching organizational design system. This course will provide the analytical tools needed to handle the complexity of organizational design in the face of an increasingly globalized and fast-changing business environment. This course also addresses human resource issues from a strategic perspective and will concentrate on the development of concepts and strategies that may increase your effectiveness in developing policies and practices, enhancing the value of the people taking part in your organization.



The objective of this course is to analyze the main trends in innovation and production of luxury vehicles by discussing with industry experts and visiting production and research sites. Vehicles are usually classified broadly by what is used to apply steering and drive forces against the ground of the water: wheeled, tracked, railed, skied; in fact we apply a different segmentation, according to customer experience and needs, thus we analyze the characteristics of luxury vehicles as a blend of technical content and hedonic experiences.



The objective of this seminar is to provide a general understanding of what general management consulting is and the skills it requires. Students will be exposed to the main consulting frameworks and methods;  consulting project activities and situations using business cases; and meet practicing consulting professionals from a variety of firms. As an integral part of the course they will also learn the basic tool required to organize and develop a business plan.



The course focuses on the main concepts of marketing management, analyzing both strategic marketing and mixed marketing activities. Specific topics covered are consumer behavior, the buying process, segmentation, product positioning, relationship marketing, branding at national and global levels, mixed marketing activities and investments such as pricing, advertising, and channel management. Participants will be able to plan a marketing strategy for an existing or new product and take it to the mixed marketing stage.



The main purpose of the course is to give students an introduction to the key analytical tools necessary to effectively pursue the core courses. The course provides a survey of fundamental tools for analyzing financial and managerial problems including time value of money, elements of financial analysis, discounting, data analysis and basics of statistics and econometrics. 



Learning method

The main aim of our teaching staff is to first lay down a solid foundation of theory and then to build on this foundation by introducing more practical aspects. This method will enable our students to confidently enter the work environment of the industry, ready to manage a variety of scenarios.

The teaching staff will help you develop your understanding of these concepts and techniques through the use of lectures and seminars; group projects and company visits; guest speakers and case studies; videos and presentations; as well as individual assignments and assisted private studying.

The courses are structured to give the maximum freedom to learn to the students and allow the professors to teach and assess the students in the best way possible. Assessments can take the form of individual/group presentations, projects, oral and written exams as well as, of course, class participation.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Creating employability is one of the primary goals of our MBA program which is achieved through systematic career development approach as well as an ongoing effort to effectively align the professional projects of our students with the needs expressed by businesses.

The internship acts as a perfect professional springboard, especially considering the fact that just six months after graduation, Bologna Business School has historically achieved a 97% placement.

The Career Development Department will help participants pursue their career goals and will support them throughout the job seeking process. This specialized department is dedicated to career exploration and fulfillment. A qualified career counselor will assist students with a variety of services and resources including job searching strategies, interview skills, resume development, career/personality assessments and much more.

Career Development Sessions
A dedicated career development session is held as part of the initial work placement program. This workshop is focused on managerial employability, an overview of successful tips for interviewing as well as arranging mock interviews.

FEES

The tuition fees for the Global MBA Program are 27,000 euros (VAT free) to be paid in three installments (the first installment is due upon enrollment).

The fees include participation in the Master, all the study material which will be made available through the online platform, and access to the services and facilities of Bologna Business School, such as: a personal account for the BBS Wi-Fi, use of the PCs in the Computer Lab, access to the study areas, access to the internal gym and special rates for the School restaurant. Furthermore, the fee gives participants the right to take advantage of supporting activities of the School, such as the language courses and the master lectures by invitation.

Free parking on the BBS campus is also available to students.

In addition, University of Bologna Student Card grants access to all of the university facilities including more than 100 libraries (also consist of online subscriptions and databases), the three city center canteens and all university student related discount offers. SCHOLARSHIPS

Bologna Business School offers both full and partial scholarships for participants of the MBA. All applicants are eligible to apply regardless of their nationality. Scholarships are merit-based (both academic as well as professional merit) and cover tuition costs only.

The Global MBA offers scholarships of:

AFRICA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

BBS and the Foundation for World Wide Cooperation grant the Africa Scholarship Program for the Academic Year 2017-2018. This Program aims to facilitate the participation of 10 young bright talents from Africa wishing to pursue an MBA and contribute to the social and economic development of their Continent.

REQUIREMENTS

In order to apply it is necessary to have:

  • a Bachelor’s Degree (must have been obtained at least two years before the enrollment deadline)
  • 2+ years of qualified work experience
  • English language proficiency

APPLICATION PROCESS

This Master is open to all applicants with a Bachelor’s degree obtained at least two years before the enrollment deadline of each round (June 2017 – round I; September, 2017 – round II). There are three rounds of admissions, the first round will be open for applications until April, 2017. The second round will close on June, 2017. The first two rounds are open to candidates of all nationalities.

Candidates with degrees obtained within the European Union may request a European Diploma Supplement directly from their Universities. The Declaration of Value does not necessarily have to be submitted before the application deadline. You can safely submit it later on should there be a lack of time. The Conditional enrollment form mentioned in the list above can se submitted in the mean time.

 

Admission to the program is subject to the positive assessment of the candidates’ individual interview and qualifications (e.g. curriculum vitae, GMAT/GRE, reference letters, etc.). The admission board, consisting of Bologna Business School faculty members, reviews the applications on a rolling basis. Candidates will be contacted by an admission team member as soon as their application has reached Bologna Business School.

In line with the number of available places, admission to the program is granted according to the applicants’ position in the list of qualified candidates, drawn up on the basis of the total score awarded at the end of the admission process. Students who achieve positions of merit in the final list of admitted candidates may benefit from full or partial scholarships. All students are eligible to apply for a special long-term and low-interest honor loan.

Of course we will. Non-EU citizens have to apply for a student visa before being able to commence their studies. We can provide you with a letter of admission as well as a letter of support, which you can use to make your visa application. In the case of particular problems our staff will be ready to contact embassies directly to discover the source of the problem and solutions to fix it.
After you arrive in Italy, you will be required to apply for a residence permit. Our staff will be able to help you fill out the forms and give you any support you need for this process as well.
If you do not live in Italy then you can participate via Skype. You will be contacted several days before the selection date to inform you of your time slot for the test and individual interview. At this point you can send us your Skype ID so that we can add you to the account that will be used for the interviews.
Yes. The course is open to people of all nationalities regardless of where their previous studies have taken place. Please note, however, that admission is dependent upon you presenting one of two potential documents. If you have graduated from a university in the European Union then you will be able to get a European Diploma Supplement directly from that university. If possible, this should be submitted with your application. If you have graduated from outside the European Union then you will need to request a Declaration of Value from the Italian embassy/consulate present in the country where you graduated. Details on how to obtain this document can be found on the website of the relevant Italian embassy/consulate. If possible, this declaration of value should be submitted with your application. If not possible then it can be submitted at a later date but you will only be provisionally admitted until you do so.

Yes. Don’t worry if you if you are unable to present a IELTS or TOEFL, your level of English will be assessed during the selection process. You can be excused from the need to present proof of your English level if you are a native English speaker.
